The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, today demanded that the budgets of all universities and colleges in Gujarat should be made available online to empower students of the state.
"Today we submitted a memorandum to the state governor demanding that the government should make budgets of all universities and colleges available online," NSUI president Rohit Chaudhary told reporters here today.
"If budgets are available online, every student would know what type of funding is available for their education and other development, as well as how it is being spent. This is very critical for their empowerment," he said.
In their memorandum to the Governor today, the NSUI also urged all universities and college managements to hold regular hold 'student panchayats' or 'open house' sessions to sort out day-to-day students' issues on campuses.
Replying to a query, he said that there were 38 universities in 16 states across the country which held regular 'open house' sessions for students.
Gujarat NSUI president Aditya Gohil told reporters that vice chancellors of Gujarat University and North Gujarat University have assured them of seriously considering their proposal to hold 'open house' sessions.
"In principle, 45 grant-in-aid colleges across the state have agreed to put their respective budgets online," he said.
The NSUI also plans to hold workshops in every college in Gujarat to spread awareness among students and to sensitise them about the Right To Information (RTI) Act.
