Commenting on Rajasthan Assembly's decision to award one month rigorous imprisonment to a woman police inspector for breach of privilege, a senior IAS officer today said the quantum of punishment was comparatively high and unjustified.
Rajasthan Assembly had awarded rigorous imprisonment for 30 days to suspended inspector Ratna Gupta, for breach of privilege, on Thursday.
J C Mohanti, Principal Secretary, Public Works department said, it was his personal opinion and he was aware that it may invite action against him.
"I feel the punishment given to the woman inspector was high and such things demoralise young officers.
Seniors should come forward if there is a need to raise voice," he said.
There are absolutely no differences between the executive and legislature, but I felt it necessary to express my views on this issue, he said.
Mohanti, in an interview to a local newspaper had expressed his views and today said, he stood by them.
Surendra Jadawat, chairman of the Assembly's privilege committee said the officer's comments were uncalled for and action may be taken against him.
"He has commented on the entire legislature and action may be taken against him if the Speaker refers the matter before the committee," Jadawat told PTI, adding that the committee's meeting would take place next month.
On the other hand, government sources said, the officer may be served a show cause notice.
