Premature quintuplets (five babies) recently born to a 25-year-old woman at Ambikapur district hospital in Chhattisgarh, have been shifted to All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) here after their condition deteriorated.
According to doctors, the babies, all girls, are underweight and are suffering from jaundice.
"All the five babies were admitted to AIIMS last night after their condition turned serious. They were referred here from Ambikapur district hospital," Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Dr Ajay Dani, told PTI.
"They have been kept in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Three of the babies are very critical, while two others are serious. We have planned for blood exchange transfusion for four of them," he added.
They are under the continuous observation of senior pediatricians of the hospital, he said.
Their mother Manita Rajwade, wife of Mahesh Rajwade, has been admitted to the gynaecological ward and her condition is normal, he added.
Manita gave birth to quintuplets on Saturday in District Hospital, Ambikapur, located around 350 kms away from the state capital Raipur.
According to doctors, the babies are premature and took birth in between six to seven months of pregnancy.
The state government had announced to provide free medical aid to babies and their mother.
