Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi alleged that games were being played and religion was also being "devalued" and it should have been kept out of the discourse.
"In fact, all the religious places Rahul Gandhi has visited, many of those priests have come forward since then to say clearly that he is and has been treated like a Hindu," he said.
Singhvi was responding to queries on the row over Gandhi's name appearing in the register for non-Hindus at the Somnnath temple in Gujarat.
"They don't realise they are actually debasing and devaluing religion, they don't realise that they are debasing what should have been noble and kept out of the discourse," he told reporters.
Singhvi said the Congress party was not bothered, but asked the BJP to introspect while alleging that "they don't lose a single opportunity in redefining basic rules of democratic politics in religious terms".
To a question on the controversy of film "Padmavati", he said his party's view before, during and after the row has remained the same, but that of the BJP will change like the weather or rain.
