Rain in many parts of Tamil Nadu brought respite to the people from the sizzling temperature, with Padalur in Perambalur recording the highest of 13 cm.
Vedasanthur (Dindigul) and Aravakurichi (Karur) received 11 cm each, according to the rainfall statistics available for the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today.
Paramathivelur (8 cm), Vazhapadi and Krishnagiri (6 cm each) and many other areas in different districts like Karur, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Theni, Puthukottai, Tiruchirappally and Vellore received good spells of rain.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places over all the interior districts of Tamil Nadu as well as the coastal parts of the state, besides Puduchery for May 8.
The weather office has predicted partly cloudy skies for Chennai and its neighbourhood, and said rain or thundershower was likely in some areas during evening or night.
Maximum and minimum temperature will be around 37 and 29 degrees Celsius respectively.
The rain in interior and southern districts brought cheer to people as the scorching summer had made life difficult.
With the hottest period in May, described as 'Agni Natchathiram or Kathiri' in Tamil, setting in, the mercury had soared, confining people indoors.
Tiruchirappalli Airport, Karurparamathi and Periyakulam still recorded the highest temperature, sizzling at 40 degree celsius, the weather office said.
