Well-known reformist-singer Satyapal Maharaj Chincholikar was attacked by a 28-year-old man in the city, police said today.
The incident took place on the night of May 12 when Chincholikar performed in Bhoiwada, central Mumbai, as a part of Buddha Jayanti celebrations.
The attacker was allegedly upset with certain comments of Chincholikar, who preaches against social evils such as superstitions and addiction through the age-old 'kirtan' format, accompanied by tambourine.
As the performance ended, Kunal Jadhav, a Navi Mumbai resident, suddently rushed forward and tried to stab Chincholikar in the stomach with a knife, police said.
While Chincholikar suffered a minor injury and was taken to a nearby hospital, the people around him caught hold of Jadhav who tried to run away.
Police registered a case under section 324 of IPC (voluntarily causing hurt) against him.
Jadhav was upset over some of the statements made by the social activist, a senior police officer said.
The accused subsequently got bail. Police are conducting further probe.
