This was the first time that a Congress leader came to India Gate to engage with protesters demanding justice for the Delhi gangrape victim.

Choudhury tried to pacify the protesters for nearly an hour but the latter insisted on concrete action from the government to ensure safety of women.

She told protesters to leave the spot for the day and come tomorrow. The Congress leader also asked them to form a committee to talk with the government on the issue.

The protesters, however, did not relent.

Earlier in the day, Choudhury was present at a meeting called by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi during which the party leaders met a group of protesters.
