The Centre is awaiting the report on a high-level probe by Uttar Pradesh government, which is investigating alleged irregularities in a trust run by senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid and his wife Louise, Union Social Justice Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot said today.
"In a response to a Rajya Sabha member's question, we had said that if required the government will ask the CBI to investigate the alleged irregularities in Dr Zakir Husain Memorial Trust in Uttar Pradesh.
"The economic offences wing of the Uttar Pradesh is also looking into the matter. Since, this is a high-level probe, we decided that we will wait for its report and then take a decision accordingly," Gehlot told reporters here.
The Minister also said that he has written to the Uttar Pradesh government in this regard.
"I have already written to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for two-three times in this regard," he said.
It was alleged that the Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust run by Khurshid and his wife Louise, allegedly forged signatures to receive government grants for welfare of the disabled people.
However, Khurshid and his wife have denied the allegations.
Gehlot also said that 81 NGOs have been issued show-cause notices for various charges, of which five have been blacklisted.
