Meghalaya CID has sealed the residence of the elusive Chancellor of CMJ University Chandra Mohan Jha here, officials said today.
Two of his personal vehicles were also seized from the posh 'Swasti Niwas' compound.
Jha, who was on the run since Governor R S Mooshahary blew off the lid of fake PhD scam involving the private varsity, was asked to appear before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate on July 19 next.
While four officials, including Registrar Mrinal Kanti Deb and his deputy Premlal Rai, were arrested for alleged fraud, two of the campuses of the varsity have been sealed.
Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has appointed Tezpur University Vice Chancellor Mihir K Chaudhury as chairman of a nine-member committee to probe the functioning of the university.
Established in 2009, the CMJ University has allegedly awarded a record number of 434 PhD degrees in the past one year apart from registering 490 more PhD scholars during the same year.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the education department had accepted and forwarded the dissolution recommendation of the university by the governor.
"The matter will be brought before the cabinet for consideration," he said.
Earlier, Mooshahary had recommended dissolution of the university for "failing to accomplish the objectives of the University, apart from criminal liabilities.
