Resignation of Punjab Cong MLAs under consideration: Speaker

Days after 42 Punjab Congress MLAs submitted their resignations over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) issue, Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal today said the matter was "under consideration".
"I have received the resignation letters of the 42 Congress MLAs and the matter is under consideration. No decision has been taken yet," he said here.
On November 11, all the MLAs of Opposition Congress had submitted their resignations to Assembly Secretary Shashi Lakhanpal Mishra as the Speaker was not present.
Yesterday, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had asked the Congress MLAs to attend the November 16 special session of the state assembly on the SYL issue to chalk out a concrete strategy to protect the state's waters.

However, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh today demanded Badal should assure any new legislation passed during the session on SYL must be approved by the Governor and the BJP at the Centre.
He also asked the Chief Minister to clearly spell out the agenda for the session.

Three members of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's Awaaz-e-Punjab will also attend the November 16 session.
Political temperatures have risen in Punjab after the Supreme Court held as unconstitutional the 2004 law passed by Punjab to terminate SYL canal water sharing agreement with neighbouring states.
Meanwhile, Punjab Advocate General Ashok Aggarwal today said the legal team is yet to give its recommendations to the state government in connection with the apex court's SYL verdict.

"Recommendations have not been given yet. We are holding deliberations in this matter and trying to work it out," he said here.
A three-member legal team was constituted by the Punjab government to critically examine the apex court's verdict and advice it.
The team comprises Additional Advocate Generals Kamal Sehgal, Vinod Bhardwaj and Rajat Khanna.
