A rickshaw-puller was allegedly crushed to death by a speeding car, that was driven by a person in an inebriated state, at central Delhi's Karol Bagh area.
The deceased, who has not been identified yet, was sleeping on a pavement when the incident took place around 2am yesterday, said a senior police official.
Two occupants of the car, identified as Saurabh (23) and Chanchal (25), fled from the hospital, where they were taken for a medical examination. The medical report disclosed that both were in an inebriated state, said the official.
The accused are employees of a multinational company and reside in Gurgaon Sector 52. They are still at large and a team of police is searching their whereabouts, he said.
"The accused have been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC," said DCP (Central) Parmaditya.
Preliminary investigation also revealed that it was Chanchal who was driving the Honda City car, which has been impounded by the police, he said.
Eyewitnesses told the police that there were three occupants in the car, but the third, if any, couldn't be identified yet, they said.
According to the police, the incident took place near the Hanuman Temple at Karol Bagh, where the driver lost control over the vehicle. The car hit a pillar and then climbed the pavement, on which the rick-shaw puller and a few others were sleeping, and stopped after hitting a wall there.
The others present at the spot, pulled out the occupants of the car and handed them over to the police. They claimed that the third occupant fled the spot by the time a police team reached there.
The others sleeping on the pavement claimed that the deceased rickshaw puller was new in the area and they did not know his name.
