The award comprises a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh, a trophy and a citation.
"Sarin has been selected for her sustained work in investigation of crimes, political assassinations, terrorism cases, frauds and economic offences during her journalistic career, including leading The Indian Express investigation team into the Indian accounts and account-holders mentioned in Panama Papers during 2016," according to an official statement by International Press Institute (IPI).
Sarin, Executive Editor-Investigations, The Indian Express, will receive the award from Justice R M Lodha, former Chief Justice of India, at a function in the national capital on February 23.
The Panama Papers are a leak of 11.5 million files from the database of offshore law firm Mossack Fonseca. Over 500 Indians figured on the firm's list of offshore companies, foundations and trusts.
The IPI instituted the annual award in 2003 to recognise and honour the best work done by an Indian media organisation or journalist working in print, radio, television and internet mediums in furtherance of public interest including safeguarding of freedom of the press and other freedoms such as human rights.
