Delhi Government today hiked road tax by 25 per cent for vehicles owned by companies and firms in the national capital.
The transport department today notified the increase in road tax for such vehicles. A proposal in this regard was approved by the Delhi Assembly during Budget Session in June 25 this year.
A senior government official said that the government's move will not affect any individual buying bike or car.
The increase in road tax by 25 per cent on the existing rate will only be for all categories of new private vehicles registered in the name of companies and firms.
"The department has notified the 25 per cent increase in road tax for new vehicles registered in the name of firms and companies," the official said.
For instance, a firm or company buying a new car worth Rs 8 lakh will now have to pay a road tax of Rs 70,000, which was Rs 56,000 earlier.
According to the Economic Survey 2014-15, the vehicular population in the national capital has registered an over six per cent increase with a total of 88.27 lakh vehicles in comparison to last year.
There were 88.27 lakh vehicles, including 27,90,566 cars and jeeps, during 2014-15 while in 2013-14, the vehicular population was 82.58 lakh.
