During his search for the truth, he begins to reconnect with the family he left behind.
Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Melissa Leo and Leighton Meester are among the supporting cast.
The screenplay is by Gran Torino scribe Nick Schenk and first-time writer Bill Dubuque.
The film opened this year's Toronto Film Festival last Friday.
