The suspense drama is the movie adaptation of a love story by Patricia Highsmith, set in 1950s New York, and Mara , 28, will portray a lesbian, said the Hollywood Reporter.
"We're over the moon to have Rooney on board. I've been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate onscreen is thrilling to say the least," Haynes said.
Shooting for the film will begin in spring 2014.
