Rs 1.44 Cr worth goods seized

Stepping up its vigil in curbing video piracy, police have seized Rs 1.44 crore worth of goods including several compact discs and have arrested 390 persons across Tamil Nadu.
"The Video Piracy cell conducted a special raid all over the state and registered 390 cases, arrested 390 accused. The team also seized 27,500 CDs/DVDs which include latest Tamil movies. The total goods seized worth Rs 1.44 crore", a police release said.
Till date, the video piracy cell has registered 5,875 cases compared to 2,664 cases last year.
The police have also planned to arrest cable television operators who screen unauthorised films without valid licesne.
"In the last three months 28 cases have been arrested who indulged in telecasting of pirated newly released Tamil movies", it said.
Six cases of Cinematography Act was filed against the owners of film theatres, who involved in illegal recording of movies through cameras in cinema theatres.
Seven cases were registered including two each in Virudhu Nagar, Madurai and one each in Dindigul and Coimbatore.
The police have sought Karur District Collector to cancel the license of another theatre in Karur for allegedly recording the recently released movie "Darling", the release said.
