Rs 1 crore worth of liquor seized in raids

Excise department and election officials have during raids since the past few weeks seized Rs one crore worth of liquor.
The brew had been found to be stocked without valid permits and permission and cases have been registered for follow up action, District Election officer P.Jawahar said.
Excise authorities have suspended the licence of one liquor shop in Yanam at the end of verification of their records and after establishing the fact of sale of excess quantum of the brew, he said..
He said of Rs 3.5 crore unaccounted money seized by flying squads at various points from vehicles as much as Rs three crore had been returned after verification of the records and statements deposed by those who carried the cash.
Postal Ballot facilitation centres have been opened to enable government staff, police personnel and others drafted for election duty to cast their votes. Of the 9258 staff around 5110 staff had cast their postal ballots in the facilitation centre. The remaining personnel would cast their votes tomorrow and day after tomorrow, Jawahar said.
Electronic voting machines used for the May 16 polls were being got ready in a phased manner. EVMs were being sealed and kept in strong rooms on the premises of the government women's college and government women's polytechnic which are the two counting centres for the votes that would be polled on May 16.
A total of 116 polling locations had been identified to be vulnerable. Of 935 complaints of violation of model code of complaints received, election authorities have disposed of 870 complaints and the rest were being processed, he said.
The DEO said the law and order situation was under control in the Union Territory.
Puducherry goes to polls on May 16 while counting of votes is on May 19.
