Rs 4,000 crore to resolve man-animal conflict in Assam

Union Forest and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today said the Centre has earmarked Rs 4,000 crore for resolution of the man-animal conflict in Assam, where three persons were killed and over 15 injured by elephants in Jorhat district alone in the past three days.
At a programme in the Rain Forest Research Institute (RRFI) near here, Javadekar said he has asked for a detailed report on the marauding jumbos that have been creating havoc in the districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar and Lakhimpur.
"As soon as the report from the Assam Government reaches the Forest Ministry at the Centre, we are ready to release Rs 4,000 crore," Javadekar said responding to queries on the deaths caused by elephants.

He also urged the local MPs to submit a detailed report on the situation by next week.
Javadkar took part in a plantation ceremony here and inaugurated exhibition stalls of RFRI.
He asked farmers, Joint Forest Management Committee members, bamboo artisans, workers of agarbatti and agar oil industries, to take the benefits of the technologies developed by RFRI.
The minister also urged scientists of the Institute to dedicate their service for innovative and productive research to strengthen nation building activities and sustainable management of biodiversity and bio-resources.
He mentioned about patenting some product and procedures such as bamboo preservation, artificial agarwood forming technology and plant growth promoting microorganisms developed by this research Institute.
