RS biennial poll from Puducherry on Sept 28

The biennial election to Rajya Sabha for the lone seat from the union territory would be held on September 28, Election Commission said today.
The poll has been necessitated in view of the expiry of the term of sitting member P.Kannan (Congress) on October 6.
Secretary to the union territory Assembly had been designated as the Returning Officer, Chief Electoral Officer Dr V. Candavelou said in a release here.
Going by the present strength of parties, ruling AINRC, floated by Chief Minister N Rangasamy after breaking away from Congress, is expected to wrest the seat as it has 15 MLAs and the support of an Independent.

In the opposition camp, Congress has seven members followed by AIADMK (5) and DMK (2).
Only the 30 elected members of the assembly, which also has three nominated members, are entitled to vote in the poll.
Candavelou said the EC will issue the poll notification on September 10. While the last date for filing nominations had been slated for September 18, the scrutiny will be held the next day. The last day for withdrawal is September 21.
Polling, if necessary, would be held on September 28 and counting of votes will take place in the evening itself.
