The long-pending Rao Tula Ram flyover project in Vasant Kunj area in South Delhi is likely to take off soon as the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) today giving clearance to it.
"The project has been cleared by DUAC. The project will soon be considered by the Cabinet," Delhi PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said.
The new flyover will be constructed as an additional three-lane flyover parallel to the existing flyover.
Chouhan said along with the new flyover, an underpass will also be built on Benito Juarez Marg for traffic to cross over to Ring Road.
Earlier, some residents of Vasant Kunj area had oppose construction of the flyover.
The cost of the flyover and the underpass will be around Rs 225 crore.
The flyover is being constructed to decongest various arterial roads in South Delhi.
The project was cleared by United Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Centre.
DUAC is a body set up by the Urban Development Ministry to take care of aesthetics of the city. The clearance by DUAC is required for all major infrastructure projects like roads, bridges and flyovers.
"The three lane flyover parallel to the existing one-way flyover was conceived to ensure smooth movement of traffic from IIT Delhi to the Airport," an official said, adding that its length will be 2.2 km.
They said PWD will now prepare a detail project report for construction of the flyover.
The proposed flyover will start from the elevated carriageway of the Munirka flyover.
The Delhi Government had come up with the proposal to build the flyover three years back.
