The rupee today gained four paise to 54.43 against the dollar on the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market in early trade on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters.
Forex dealers said euro's gains against the American currency in the overseas market also supported the rupee.
The local unit had closed lower by 40 paise to end at an over one-month low of 54.47 yesterday.
Meanwhile, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell by 25.83 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 19,299.53 in early trade today.
