Ryanair plane makes emergency landing in Mallorca

A Ryanair plane with 148 passengers on board made an emergency landing today on the Spanish tourist island of Mallorca due to a false fire alert, airport authorities said.
A fire warning in the undercarriage came on shortly after the plane took off from Palma de Mallorca airport bound for Memmingen in Germany early morning, Spain's aviation authority AENA said.
"Half an hour after taking off it asked if it could come back and land because a fire alert had been activated in the undercarriage," a spokeswoman for Spain's aviation authority AENA told AFP.
"The airport activated the emergency procedure and the plane landed. There was no fire and no incident involving any passengers. The plane is being examined."

She did not say what kind of airplane it was.
A series of technical faults involving the low-cost Irish carrier Ryanair in 2012 prompted Spain to demand European authorities set tighter safety checks for planes flying to the country.
