The SAD-BJP government is committed to preserve the legacy of freedom fighters and martyrs, due to whose sacrifices, people are living in a free society, Punjab Irrigation Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon today said.
He said this while attending the state-level function organised on the 109th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Sukhdev at the Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan here.
Dhillon called upon the people to come forward and eradicate social evils like corruption, drug abuse, female foeticide and illiteracy from society, which would be the "real tribute to the country's martyrs and fulfill their dreams."
Sukhdev along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru are remembered as the famous revolutionary trio, who stood up against the colonial rule. They were hanged on March 23, 1931.
The minister said that Sukhdev is among those great Indian freedom fighters, who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country.
Sukhdev's was born on May 15, 1907 at his ancestral house in Naughara Mohalla of Ludhiana city.
Paying tribute to him, Dhillon said, "Our government has started to celebrate the days associated with the martyrs, so that our young generation can seek inspiration from them. These functions are organised to promote national integration and instill patriotism among the people. The families of the martyrs are a treasure to the country and we must pay proper respect to them.
