The South African Cabinet today ordered that an inter-ministerial task team report on the funding of controversial security upgrades to President Jacob Zuma's private home be released to the public.
The report is the result of one of two probes launched in the wake of an outcry over allegations that the government had used about USD 21 million of taxpayers' money to finance the security upgrades. A separate investigation has also been conducted by the country's public protector.
"Cabinet deliberated on the presentation by the Minister of Public Works on the Inter-Ministerial Task Team report on the security upgrades at the President's Nkandla houses... And directed that the report be released to the public," the Cabinet said in a statement today after its latest meeting.
It said the Security Ministers Cluster - five Cabinet ministers who deal with security - and the Minister of Public Works will conduct a media briefing on the report next Tuesday.
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, whose position is the equivalent of an ombudsman, said yesterday her report on her office's probe into the funding of the president's private home is expected to be released by mid-January.
