School minibus rams footpath to avoid hitting bike, driver

The driver of a Tempo Traveller ferrying school children was killed after the vehicle hit a footpath in central Delhi's Patel Nagar area today as he manoeuvred to avert a collision with a speeding motorbike, police said.
Six student were injured in the incident which took place this morning.
Sonu, who was the driver of the four-wheeler was ferrying the students of the Faith Academy School, located on the Tank Road, a police officer said.
"When the signal turned green, Sonu drove his vehicle ahead. But an over-speeding bike overtook the tempo traveller and in order to avoid the collision, Sonu drove the vehicle over the footpath," said the officer.

The accident happened near a metro pillar on the main road in Ranjit Nagar area. The impact was severe and Sonu was thrown out of the window and sustained head injuries, he said.
The children inside were crying for help. When passerby saw the tempo traveller, they took the children out and informed the police, police said.

Sonu was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The children were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and discharged within a couple of hours, police said.
A case under sections 279 (rash negligent driving) and 304A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against unknown persons at the Patel Nagar police station, said the officer.

Police will scan the CCTV footage from the area to determine the sequence of events that led to the accident and will also question eyewitnesses.
