Police today registered a case against six jail officials for tampering with prison records in connection with a recent incident where Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is undergoing jail term in Central Jail Patiala, allegedly thrashed a senior scribe during a meeting.
Jail Department has written to Patiala police that the meeting between senior journalist Kanwar Sandhu and Rajoana, a convict in the Beant Singh assassination case, was unauthorised, police said.
Police have registered a case against suspended Assistant Jail Superintendent Jagmel Singh, warders Kewal Singh and Nirbhay Singh and Mani Singh, Darshan Singh and Jarnail Singh.
The department had reported to police that Sandhu had met Rajoana without any permission and following the brawl, the jail officials allegedly made a forged entry to save their skin.
Police have registered case under Sections 166 (public servant disobeying law), 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury), 218 (public servant framing incorrect record or writing with intent to save person from punishment), 465 (forgery), 466 (forgery of record of court or of public register), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code besides Section 54 of the Prisons Act.
Meanwhile, police would also verify the involvement of others in the case.
Rajoana had allegedly manhandled Sandhu, who visited the jail with controversial dismissed cop Gurmeet Singh Pinky early this week.
Sandhu was asking Rajoana questions about the allegations levelled by Pinky against him.
Later, the prisons department had suspended Assistant Jail Superintendent Jagmel Singh and five others for facilitating the interview.
