In the second tragic death of a woman in an elevator in China this week, a factory worker was killed when she got stuck in the gap between the lift and the platform, state media reported today.
The latest incident occurred in a factory elevator in east China's Jiangsu Province, local authorities said today.
The accident happened yesterday evening in a cargo lift in Wuxi City, when the woman suddenly became stuck in the gap between the lift and the platform.
Her body was severely disfigured when rescuers arrived at the scene, according to the local government.
Further investigation is under way.
The accident came on the heels of another fatal tragedy in central China's Hubei Province when a woman was killed in a shopping mall escalator on Sunday. However, she managed to save her 2-year-old son by pushing him to safety.
Surveillance footage from the incident showed a metal panel at the top of the escalator giving way, causing the 30- year-old woman and her toddler to stumble.
The woman, identified as Xiang Liujuan was able to push her child to safety as she fell into the escalator and got crushed.
China ranks first worldwide in use and production of elevators and escalators. By the end of 2014, the country had 3.6 million elevators and escalators in use and recorded annual growth of 20 per cent, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
An official survey in 2014 on 2,523 elevators aged 15 years or older showed 7 per cent of them had major safety risks, it said.
Last year, the country had 48 elevator and escalator- related accidents with a total of 36 deaths reported.
