CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy today said "secular and democratic" parties should win forthcoming elections in the BJP-ruled Gujarat.
"The BJP government is not in the favour of the common people. In Gujarat, secular and democratic parties should win," he told reporters after attending a party programme.
Observing that there was a difference of "9 per cent" of votes between the BJP and the Congress in earlier polls, Reddy proposed a Leftist secular platform to fight the "fascist" BJP and RSS in the country.
"A secular, democratic and Leftist platform is necessary to fight the fascist onslaught of the Sangh Pariwar and the BJP," Reddy said.
Underlining that fighting for public issues is different from poll politics, the Left leader said a "sort of" understanding is necessary in any election to prevent the division of secular votes.
He said the Left and the Congress cannot reach an understanding in states where they are fighting each other.
"There also cannot be an understanding where the Left parties are very weak," the CPI general secretary said.
He said the CPI wanted "unification" of Communist parties and not a merger.
Responding to a query on Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's comments wherein he had reportedly praised the Nizam rule in the erstwhile Hyderabad State, Reddy said, "Either KCR does not understand the history properly or he is purposefully supporting and trying to exaggerate Nizam's Rule".
"Nizam was a cruel king. Nizam rulers had exploited and looted the people of Telangana for seven generations. People fought against the Nizams and his supporting groups. Chandrasekhar Rao does not have respect to the people's struggle but he has respect to Nizams," Reddy said.
