Seneviratne will succeed Prasad Kariyawasam who has been moved to Washington. Kariyawasam replaces Jaliya Wickremasuriya.
A political appointee to the foreign service, Seneviratne headed the Department of Archaeology at the University of Peradeniya and headed the Central Cultural Fund, which is responsible for conservation of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage.
The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and its Conservation and Site Preservation Committee awarded Seneviratne the 2013 Conservation and Heritage Management Award for his excellent conservation work in Sri Lanka.
Seneviratne's appointment is subject to being approved by the parliament's committee on high positions, the external affairs ministry said.
