There were no casualties, police said.
After receiving a tip-off about movement of some members of Adilabad area committee of the Maoists, police were conducting a combing operation in the Mangi forest when the ultras attacked them, Bellampalli additional superintendent of police Bhaskar Bhushan said.
After the police retaliated, the Maoists fled, leaving behind 'kit bags', he said, adding combing was intensified and additional police force was sent to the area.
"The combing is going on in Kasipet and Tiryani mandals of Adilabad district. We found nine kit bags containing medicines and food. No one was injured," Bellampalli DSP Eshwar Rao told PTI.
