Shortage of 2,225 doctors at primary health centres in India

There is a dearth of doctors, nurses and para-medical staff at several Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) across the country, according to government statistics.
In the primary health centres across the country, 7,467 posts of doctors, out of 33,515 sanctioned posts are lying vancant.
As per the government figures, there is a shortage of 2,225 doctors in India as against the requirement of 24,448 doctors in PHCs.
1,648 posts of doctors out of 4,509 are currently vacant in Uttar Pradesh as against the requirement of 3496 doctors, resulting in a shortfall of 635 doctors, according to the government data.
There is a scarcity of 421 doctors in Chhattisgarh as out of 1566 sanctioned posts, 1,204 are lying vacant and the requirement of doctors is 783.
Further, there are 290 vacant posts of doctors out of 1,317, as against the requirment of 1305 in Odisha which means there is a shortage of 278 doctors.
Gujarat and Karnataka also has a shortage 269 and 261 doctors respectively, Parliament was informed today.
Apart from that there is a shortage of 14,952 specialists which includes surgeons, physicians, gynaecologists and paediatricians the country as against the requirement of 20,748 specialists in CHCs and PHCs.
Total 5422 posts of specialists out of 10,904 posts are currently vacant.
Rajasthan (1576) has the highest shortage of specialists followed by Tamil Nadu (1540) and Uttar Pradesh (1352).
In addition to that, there is a shortage of 14, 422 nursing staff at CHCs and PHCs as against the requirement of 60,757.
There is also a paucity of 13,395 laboratory technicians as against the requirement of 29,635.
"The posts required for health facilties are filled up by respective state /UT governments, there are impressed upon from time to time to fill up the vacant posts," said the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in a written reply to a query.
