Show cause notice issued to channel over reality show content

The Information and Broadcasting ministry has sent a show cause notice to a TV channel after it felt that some of the content aired by it on popular reality show 'Bigg Boss 7' was not appropriate for unrestricted public exhibition.
Sources said the ministry had examined the contents of two episodes of the show after it received complaints.
A court had also asked the ministry to examine the content aired on the show, they said.
"There had been concern about the language used by some contestants in a conversation that was aired on the reality show Bigg Boss 7. In one of the episodes of the show, a contestant is shown sitting on an electric chair and being given electric shocks," an official source told PTI.

The source said taking note of such content, the show cause notice had been sent to Colors, the channel on which the show is aired.
"It was felt that the content exhibited was not suitable for unrestricted public exhibition and prima facie it is violative of the programming code under the Cable TV Act so the ministry has issued a show cause notice and asked the channel to explain," the source said.
