The incident took place in East Harlem last Friday as paramedics tried to transport a sick woman who is estimated to be over 360 kg, officials and witnesses said.
Paramedics rushed to the woman's second-floor apartment on Fifth Avenue, just a block from Central Park, officials said.
They treated the woman, but quickly realised that her size prevented them from getting her out the front door, New York Daily News reported.
Firefighters were called in to remove a window and perform a "high angle operation," officials said.
The woman was being treated at St. Luke's Hospital, officials said.
The fire department confirmed that a "larger patient" was removed from the building, but would not estimate how heavy she was. Witnesses at the scene said the woman looked to be about 800 pounds (363 kg).
