Sister Prema reelected as Missionaries of Charity head

German-born Sister Mary Prema has been reelected for the second time as the superior general of the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa.
"Sister Prema has been reelected recently during an election to choose the head of the Missionaries. This will be her second term," the congregation's spokesperson Sunita Kumar said today.
The 61-year-old senior nun was first elected in 2009 for a period of six years. She had then succeeded Sister Nirmala Joshi who had in turn replaced Blessed Teresa in 1997.
Kumar said a number of senior sisters of the Order from different parts of the world have gathered here in Kolkata at a secluded home where they are having a six-week-long retreat.

"The election was conducted during the retreat when they pray and take part in other religious activities," she said.
The retreat will end later this week.
Known for her work among the poor, Sister Prema was born as Mechthild Pierick in 1953 to German farmers and later on joined the Missionaries after being influenced by Mother Teresa's work.
