Police today arrested six persons, two of them women, for allegedly trying to buy a six- day-old baby girl from a poor couple.
Based on a specific information, police laid a trap and nabbed a group of persons near a temple at Saroor Nagar, where they had come to complete the deal, an official said.
The newborn was rescued and will be handed over to the local Child Welfare Committee, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said.
"The gang, led by one Kedavath Ravi, contacted a tribal couple in a village in Mahbubnagar district and offered to buy their newborn child," Bhagwat said.
The couple is poor and already has two daughters, said Bhagwat.
According to police, the gang members planned to buy the newborn for Rs 15,000 and sell her to a prospective customer for Rs 80,000.
