Six mega cities in the country have been put under aerial surveillance to aid city policing, the government today said.
"With a view to equipping police forces of the six mega cities of Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bangalore, aerial surveillance has been included as a component of Mega City Policing (MCP)," Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in Rajya Sabha.
Correcting a reply made earlier by then Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde in the House, Singh said as soon as the error came to notice, action was taken to rectify it so that it could be laid on the Table of the House.
Shinde, while replying to a starred question on steps taken by government to protect cities with aerial surveillance, had said, "No such proposal is under consideration."
Singh said, "Guidelines for security of some cities of our country with aerial surveillance were inadvertently left out in the reply...It is, therefore, proposed to revise the reply."
Ministry of Home Affairs has already announced that in modern times, police organisations too need to be adequately equipped with latest technological equipment and gadgets to effectively tackle challenges of internal security and keeping this in view a plan for MCP has been included as a sub- component of Modernisation of State Police Forces plan.
Components of MCP include CCTV surveillance, highway patrol cars and aerial surveillance.
