Slum-dwellers fight in Tollygunge area

At least five persons, including a policemen, were injured in brick-batting by people in the Tollygunge area over a stone-throwing incident, prompting the police and a state minister to step in to bring the situation under control.
Four persons were arrested for alleged involvement in the incident when two groups of slum-dwellers in south Kolkata's Tollygunge Road area fought, a senior police officer said.
Contingents from the Tollygunge and Charu Market police stations with reinforcement from the Control room intervened and dispersed the warring groups.
Local MLA and state power minister Shobandeb Chatterjee rushed to the spot last night and intervened to pacify the agitated people of the area.
The groups of slum-dwellers again fought this afternoon throwing stones and glass bottles, the officer said.
Huge police team from Tollygunge Police Station, Charu Market Police Station, Alipore Police Station, New Alipore and Chetla Police Station along with force from Kolkata Police Control and a contingent of RAF went to the spot, he said.
Minister Chattopadhyay, who again wen the spot today, alleged laxity on the part of policemen posted there leading to the reoccurrence of the incident.
"Our officers tried hard and during the melee five persons and one ASI were injured. Our officers managed dispersing both the groups by 3.45PM," he said.
