A day after a Tamil TV channel dropped a show on women wearing 'mangalsutra' and their rights in the face of "opposition" by Hindu Munnani, social media sites went abuzz today with jibes and debate over the issue.
The news channel yesterday dropped airing the debate on women wearing mangalsutra after Hindu Munnani opposed it and staged protests saying it "denigrated" Hindu beliefs.
Ten functionaries of the Hindu outfit were arrested here yesterday after a cameraperson of the news channel that was scheduled to air the debate was allegedly assaulted and a camera broken during the coverage of the protest against the programme.
Social media sites like Facebook, mobile messaging app Whatsapp saw hard hitting messages and jibes both for and against the Thali show.
Those in favour of the show said it was a fundamental right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution.
Pro-Hindu outfit social media users wanted to know if the other side will support freedom of expression if a deabte was held on similar practices concerning women in other religions.
Sources in the channel said a day ahead of the show, functionaries of Hindu outfits came to the office and requested the management not to air the show as it would portray Hindu faith in poor light.
Meanwhile, Hindu Munnani cadres staged protest demonstrations today in several places agitating against the arrest of ten of its functionaries.
