With political slugfest over the solar scam continuing, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's son today shot off a legal notice to a BJP state functionary for making "defamatory" statements, as leaders of congress and LDF opposition in Kerala traded charges at each other.
Lashing out at the chief minister, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan dubbed as the "biggest joke' the CM's assertion that he would remain in office to prove the truth.
The day, however, went without violent street protests, as witnessed in the last few days. A march was taken out by some BJP activists seeking the chief minister's resignation.
Taking serious offence to BJP state general secretary K Surendran's allegation that he had close association with a solar energy firm, the chief minister's son, Chandy Oommen threatened to sue him unless he withdrew his statement and made a public apology.
Oommen, also a state secretary of the Youth Congress, said the BJP leader's allegation were toally "unfounded and irresponsible" and was intended to insult him.
Unrelenting on his onslaught on the chief minister, Achuthanandan said Chandy's assertion that he would be doing injustice to truth if he quit the office at this juncture without proving the truth was "the biggest joke of recent times."
If Chandy had decided to cling to office, it was to hide the fraudulent deals indulged in by the fake solar company and its associates, the CPI-M veteran told a press meet here, a day after a defiant Chandy ruled out his resignation.
Seeking to turn tables on the opposition,KPCC spokesperson M M Hassan alleged that the son of CPI(M) leader and former Home Minister Kodiyeri Balalakrishnan had links to the solar fraud.
Hassan said as many as 14 complaints relating to solar energy cheating were made when Balakrishnan was Home Minister in the previous LDF government but no proper investigation had been conducted in any of them.
Accusing Chandy of trying to shield the accused in the case, CPI(M) central committee member T M Thomas Isaac alleged that he had never shown any sincere interest in getting the case properly investigated.
The solar scam pertains to alleged cheating of several persons to the tune of crores of rupees by Saritha Nair and her accomplice Biju Radhakrishnan by offering solar panel solutions.
