Sonowal visits Indo-Bangla border in Silchar

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today paid a visit to the Indo-Bangla border in Silchar sector of Karimganj district and took stock of the existing barbed wire fencing along the border.
The first ever chief minister of the state to have visited the border areas, Sonowal stepped into Turkurgram after crossing river Kusiara, an official release here said.
He interacted with BSF personnel about border security and the steps being taken to deal with criminal activities along the international border.
BSF officers apprised Sonowal of the steps being undertaken to fortify the 128 km long border, the release said.
Of the 128 km, barbed wire fencing have been completed along 118 km and work for the remaining 10 km would be over very soon, they informed the chief minister.
The National Buildings Construction Corporation and Central PWD were executing the fencing works in Silchar sector, the release said.
Sonowal assured the BSF that the state government would press for technological solutions to aid the border guards' endeavour to maintain constant vigil along the border.
The chief minister also interacted with the villagers at Turkurgram and enquired about their health, education and connectivity issues.
He also directed the Inland Water Transport Department to introduce day-night ferry services between Bhanga and Turkurgram.
