The Interior Ministry said the body of the 61-year old consular official was discovered by his housekeeper in his apartment in the upscale Garden City suburb. He had been a resident of Khartoum for three years, the ministry said.
The police statement said it has opened an investigation into the matter and is initiating appropriate legal and technical procedures.
Sudan's Foreign Ministry extended condolences to the Spanish Embassy and the family of the victim. A spokesman from the Spanish Foreign Ministry said the man's name was Emiliano Garcia Arocas. He spoke anonymously as was not authorised to give a named statement to the press.
