Sri Lankan navy today arrested eight Tamil Nadu fishermen on charges of poaching in the island nation's waters.
They were arrested near Katchatheevu, an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974, and were taken to Thalaimannar along with their boat, Assistant Director of Fisheries Department, P Ravindran and Rameswaram Fishermen Organisation President, S Emerit said.
The Naval personnel had on December 9 fired in the air and damaged more than 20 fishing nets to chase away fishermen from Tamil Nadu while fishing near Katchatheevu and other places.
