The Jammu and Kashmir circle of the Postal Department and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) will jointly organise a five-day "Srinagar Post Office Fest" from tomorrow, in an effort to create awareness and involve local residents to keep the city clean.
The festival, with a theme "Clean Srinagar, Green Srinagar", will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in presence of Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Kruparani Killi at General Post Office Srinagar.
"The aim of the festival is to create awareness and involve the entire population of the city as a movement to build the mission of Clean Srinagar-Green Srinagar," Chief Post Master General, J and K, John Samuel told reporters here.
Samuel said the festival will have many programmes like 'Walk for Srinagar', letter writing and debate competitions, stamp designing and quiz contest, which will bring the people of Srinagar together.
Commissioner SMC, G N Qasba, who was also present, said Srinagar has been bestowed with natural beauty and there is a need to preserve that beauty and keep the city clean and green.
"The objective is to make the city at par with world class cities by involving the people," Qasba said.
He said the festival is being organised to take forward the vision of 'Clean Srinagar-Green Srinagar' and Department of Posts offers a traditional and better means of communication with the people.
The festival will also host a philately exhibition, which will showcase stamps from different parts of the country.
A modernised post office under 'Project Arrow' will also be dedicated to the people at Lal Chowk city centre, Samuels said.
Samuels also announced that every letter from the GPO Srinagar and Lal Chowk Post office will bear pictorial post marks of Chinar tree and Clock Tower respectively.
