Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir today destroyed flood-hit food commodities, worth over Rs one crore, which were being sold in the markets in six districts of the Valley.
"Acting upon specific inputs that flood-hit food commodities are being offered for sale to gullible consumers, the sleuths of Drug and Food Control Organisation, under the instructions of Commissioner Food Safety, carried out raids in various areas in district Anantnag, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Baramulla, Budgam and Shopian," an official spokesman said here.
He said during the drive, the teams confiscated and destroyed huge quantities of edibles including wheat, flour, tea and tea bags, milk, biscuits and edible oils worth approximately Rs 1,42,03,306.
The traders were found in the process of pumping such commodities to the remote areas of various districts for putting them for sale to public, the spokesman said.
He said the Commissioner of Food Safety has appealed to the general public to observe packaging conditions at the time of purchase of food articles and ensure the impressions of the floods are not borne by such commodities.
In case of any genuine complaint, it should be brought to the notice of concerned district administration for its lawful cognisance, the spokesman said.
