To prevent waterlogging in Delhi, the stormwater infrastructure has to be made efficient for which it is necessary to apply corrective measures to the faulty drainage system, IIT Delhi today recommended.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi presented its report on the causes of waterlogging and flooding in Delhi to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

To reduce flooding conditions in various parts of the city, the team from IIT Delhi noted that the stormwater infrastructure has to be made efficient.

"So, it is pertinent to apply corrective measures to the faulty drainage infrastructure, and introduce low-cost flood preventing measures such as rejuvenation of water bodies, rainwater harvesting using parks and low impact development options," it said.

"Further, the solid waste and sewage has to be managed in such a way that they do not interfere with stormwater drainage," the report noted.

The report states that Delhi has three major drainage basins, namely, Najafgarh, Barapullah and Trans-Yamuna.
