Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today said the Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) installed in the major townships along the river Ghaggar would be made operational by next year.
Khattar was addressing a gathering of 'Rally for Rivers', a mass awareness initiative of spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev aimed at revitalising the water bodies, which started from Coimbatore in September and reached here today.
"For the cleanliness of seasonal Ghaggar river which passes through both Haryana and Punjab, STPs alongside the river have been installed jointly by the government of both states," Khattar said.
"We expect these STPs to be fully functional by next year. Once these STPs are fully functional, fresh water would start flowing into the river," he said.
The chief minister appreciated the 'Rally for Rivers' campaign and assured full support of the people towards Vasudev's cause of conservation of rivers and water.
Khattar said though Haryana had no river which exclusively flowed from the state, various steps had been taken to ensure that clean water flowed into the rivers passing through the state.
"Similarly, STPs have also been installed for the cleanliness of Yamuna river and also to check the filthy water entering into the river," he said.
Speaking on this occasion, Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki expressed concern over the depleting water level in the rivers in India, saying the water in some rivers had reduced by upto 44 per cent.
"If rivers dry up, how will we save our society and the country," he said.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh UT Administrator, V P Singh Badnore and Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher also attended the event.
