Stringent law invoked in cheating case involving Leena Paul

The Mumbai police today invoked the stringent Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act in a cheating case involving model/actor Leena Paul and five others.
"We have invoked MPID in this case which empowers the investigating agency to freeze assets (of the accused) and realise the amount while the court today extended the accused's police custody till June 8," said an official.
The police had on May 29 had arrested Paul along with five others for allegedly duping around one thousand investors through a bogus chit fund company.
The company had collected deposits of Rs 10 crore, according to the police.
The police recovered 117 imported watches worth Rs 1.17 crore, 12 mobile handsets worth Rs 37.40 lakh, cash (Rs 3.5 lakh) and nine high-end imported cars including an Audi, a Mercedes a Bentley, a Masrati, etc., during the probe.
Leena has acted in the John Abraham-starrer 'Madras Cafe'.
