Gour Banga University Vice-chancellor (VC) Gopal Chandra Mishra is under indefinite gherao by 240 odd PG students from Friday afternoon as they fear that the review results of the answer scripts would affect them.
Police said the gherao started from 3 PM on Friday and was still on, police said.
According to police, the trouble began on January 25 after results of the second semester examinations were published.
The students alleged that average marking was being resorted to and they gheraoed the university's Controller of Examinations, Dr Sanatan Das on January 28, university officials said.
Das then assured the students that a review would be carried out and results were scheduled on February 25. Later the date was changed to February 20.
At this, students feared that the review of their papers were not done properly. Coupled with this there were rumours that there were possibility that many students would loose more marks in the review.
The students then gheraoed the VC on Friday from 3 PM, which is still on, university officials said.
Inspector-in-charge of English Bazar police station Purnendu Kundu confirming the gherao said, a close watch was being kept on the situation though the university authorities did not call the police saying that it was an internal matter.
"Besides, we are in constant tuoch with the university authorities," he said adding there were no reports of any untoward incident.
