Students 'tonsure' their head to get MDU regional centre

Protesting against the government's "indifferent" attitude in establishing a regional centre of Rohtak-based Maharishi Dayanand University here,office-bearers of Congress affiliated NSUI today got their head tonsured and threatened to go on hunger-strike if their demands were not met within three days.
The students claimed that they had been protesting outside the government-run Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College for past three days but none listened to them, after which today launched an aggressive protest.
"The establishment of regional centre was approved by the previous Bhupinder Singh Hudda government and a notification to this effect was also released on August 24, 2014.
"However, with the change in the government the decision to have a regional centre at Faridabad was dumped in the files by the current government," alleged Krishna Atri, District President NSUI.

Students here have been demanding a regional centre of Maharishi Dayanand University Rohtak for quiet long.
Pradeep Dhankhad, District Vice President NSUI alleged that for many years, the result of the Nehru college was not going well.

"Students feel that their career was being spoilt by not having a regional center. However, nobody in the government is taking the course of their demand. For last three days, five students were protesting outside the college.
"As nobody took cognizance to the demand, today protesting students locked the college gate and staged protests outside the college. Five office bearers of NSUI got their heads tonsured and performed 'mundan' to protest against the indifferent approach of the government," he said.

On getting information about the protest, Tehsildar Pradeep Deshwal rushed to the college and assured them that suitable action would be taken on their demands.
The agitating students said they would wait for three days for the government to take necessary action. After which, they would continue their agitation and also go on hunger strike, he added.
Meanwhile, office-bearers of BJP's students' wing ABVP today went Deputy Commissioner Dr Amit Kumar Agrawal and demanded for a full-fledged university in Faridabad.
ABVP District Coordinator Manish Tongar said there were universities in Rohtak, Hissar, Sirsa, Sonepat, Kurukshetra, Jind and Bhiwani districts, which are at a distance of merely 30 to 50 kilometre from each other, whereas, Faridabad is located at a distance of more than 120 kilometres from the MDU.

Hence, a university was needed in Faridabad, he said.
This university would also cater the needs of students of not only Faridabad but that of Palwal and Mewat districts too, he said, adding that ABVP was planning to stage massive agitation for a separate university for Faridabad.
