A 24-year-old suspected robber, wanted in a chain snatching case, was today nabbed following an exchange of fire between him and a police constable in Shahdara area, police said.
Around 1 pm, when constable Vivek was patrolling the area of Vishwas Nagar, he saw two men on a motorcycle searching for a victim near Nehru Gali, they added.
On seeing the policeman, the accused turned towards a narrow street. He asked them to stop for checking, but instead of stopping, the criminals accelerated their vehicle and fled, the police said.
The constable followed them on his scooter and blocked their way, they said.
On being intercepted, they started firing at him following which the constable fired in retaliation, Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (Crime), said.
The motorcycle rider sustained injuries. His accomplice ran away while continuously firing at the policeman, he said.
The injured accused, identified as Monu, was overpowered and apprehended by the constable, Yadav said.
During interrogation, it was found that Monu has been previously arrested in 13 cases of robbery, snatching and attempt to murder in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, he said.
Monu was also involved in a shootout with the Uttar Pradesh Police in Sector 71, Noida in January, he said.
On November 24, a gold chain was snatched in Farsh Bazar.
The CCTV footage was scanned and photos of the accused were obtained from the footage and circulated to all the beat officials, the police said.
It was found that Monu was involved in the incident.
The police personnel's name has been recommended for an out-of-turn promotion for single-handedly nabbing a notorious criminal after an encounter, in which he could have lost his life, the joint commissioner of police said.
